This week at CBPP, we focused on the federal budget, state budgets and taxes, poverty and inequality, health, food assistance, Social Security, family income support, and the economy.
On the federal budget, Paul Van de Water explained how failing to suspend or raise the debt limit would have wide-ranging effects.
On state budgets and taxes, Whitney Tucker described how failing to suspend or raise the debt limit would hurt states.
On poverty and inequality, Danilo Trisi, Alicia Mazzara, Sarah Lueck, Kathleen Romig, George Fenton, Javier Balmaceda, Shelby Gonzales, and Nick Gwyn explained that the House Build Back Better Legislation advances racial equity and they summarized their analysis in a policy brief.
On health, Tara Straw emphasized how older adults benefit if Congress closes the Medicaid coverage gap and boosts premium tax credits.
On food assistance, Zoë Neuberger found that the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children can reach more eligible families by collaborating with Medicaid and SNAP.
On Social Security, Kathleen Romig outlined what the 2021 trustees’ report shows about Social Security. We also updated our backgrounder on understanding the Social Security trust funds.
On family income support, we released a fact sheet on how cash assistance can help families meet basic needs, including addressing diaper need and period poverty.
On the economy, we updated our backgrounder on how many weeks of unemployment compensation are currently available.
