This week on Off the Charts, we blogged about the federal budget, state budgets, the economy, and health care.

  • On the federal budget, Jim Horney demonstrated that the House Republicans’ proposed spending cuts are deeper than they appear.
  • On state budgets, we featured Iris Lav’s congressional testimony on what states can do to address fiscal issues, and Michael Leachman discussed how to fix state unemployment insurance systems. Erica Williams answered questions about troubling trends in governors’ new budget proposals and explained why Michigan should not eliminate its Earned Income Tax Credit.
  • On the economy, we presented evidence that cuts to state and local services are slowing the economy.
  • On health care, Judy Solomon discussed a threat to an important provision in the Affordable Care Act and we highlighted Paul Van de Water’s testimony on how health reform will strengthen the economy. Paul also corrected a misconception about health reform’s effect on jobs and the economy.

In other news, the Center released reports on proposals to repeal health reform’s maintenance of effort provision and on the unemployment insurance system, as well as a podcast on governors’ budget proposals.
