In Case You Missed It…

This week on Off the Charts, we focused on the safety net, state budgets and taxes, federal taxes, and child nutrition.

• On the safety net, we excerpted Jared Bernstein’s New York Times Upshot blog post on nine things you might not know about minimum-wage workers.  Barbara Sard highlighted a Senate appropriations bill that expands the reach of the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s effective but underutilized Family Self-Sufficiency program.  Brynne Keith-Jennings highlighted our updated trio of SNAP resources. 

• On state budgets and taxes, Michael Mitchell described new tax changes in the District of Columbia that demonstrate how to cut taxes responsibly.  Nicholas Johnson explained what other states should learn from Kansas’ botched tax-cut experiment. 

• On federal taxes, Chye-Ching Huang pointed to new figures from the Joint Committee on Taxation that show that a repatriation tax holiday would cost billions.  Chuck Marr explained why the House should stop its fiscally irresponsible strategy to make yet another “tax extender” permanent. 

• On child nutrition, Robert Greenstein explained why the House should drop school meal waivers from its 2015 agriculture spending bill.  Rebecca Segal highlighted a new infographic on making high-poverty schools hunger free. 

We updated our state-by-state fact sheets on who benefits from SNAP and our chart book on the legacy of the Great Recession.
