Education Cuts to Grow if Stimulus Funds Expire, Cont.

The New York Times reports that hundreds of thousands of teachers across the country could face layoffs in June, as state revenues remain weak and federal Recovery Act assistance will soon dry up.  (The Washington Post has a similar story.)

Our report on this topic from this week — which we blogged about here — noted that Recovery Act funds to preserve state services will run out before states’ budgets have recovered from the recession (see chart).

Congress can show its commitment to preserving jobs and strengthening the recovery by extending those funds — and quickly.
