Today’s jobs report gave mixed signals about the overall job market but left no doubt that long-term unemployment remains a significant problem. It is too soon for policymakers to let emergency federal unemployment insurance (UI) expire at the end of the year.

Below are some charts to show how the new figures look in historical context. Here is my statement with further analysis.
